What a great place for a retirement or second home in a town that still has that a rural and historic vibe just outside of big city St. George. The lava rocks in the surrounding area are definitely black! Established in 1858 by about six pioneer families who lived side by side with Cheif Toquer, from a tribe of Paiute/Toquit natives. History has it he lived in a tent made of willow, can and leaves while the settlers housed themselves in cabines made of logs filled in with mud. The water there was scarce and the first families moved away to Kanarra but as of 1859 there were 19 families living there. The town became know for it's fruit and nut harvest from trees the settlers had planted. According to one website, "One story tells of a buyer coming for figs with nothing but his hat to carry them. When he asked the price for a hat full from the young woman selling them, she asked if fifty cents would be all right. From that incident came the standard Toquerville rate of fifty cents for a hat of figs. Black rock, Indian, and figs are just a few of the things that make this desert oasis unique." Elevation is 3,394 feet and snowfall and rain are gneerally sparse. There are Bn B's and AIRBnBs in and around the town to stay at until you get your plans in order. A nice respite in a lovely town!
